From Struggling with My Health to Thriving in Midlife
I wanted to share a personal story with you today, one that helped me shift my perspective on health and ageing. If you’re feeling like age is catching up with you or struggling with health concerns, this might resonate.
I used to believe that getting older meant inevitable decline in health, that our bodies slowly deteriorate with age, no matter what we do. I thought that things like fatigue, weight gain, and difficulty managing stress were just part of some people’s journeys, and there wasn’t much they could do to stop it. I knew I was lucky, I have great genes and a great heritage when it comes to health, but not everyone is so blessed.
Now I see in my work that ageing doesn’t have to mean struggling with chronic health conditions or losing vitality. In fact, it’s possible to not just manage but actively improve our health as we age and to continue to truly thrive. The key lies in listening to our bodies, making intentional lifestyle choices, and adopting a mindset of proactive health rather than reactive care.
This shift helped me personally overcome the challenges of managing my own health after being diagnosed with Hashimoto‘s thyroiditis, and it’s helped me guide others to regain their energy, balance, and confidence. I can now say that instead of feeling like I was fighting against my body, I feel in sync with it, understanding its needs and responding with care and attention.
Here’s why this matters if you’re struggling with managing your health, especially if you’re feeling the effects of age or chronic conditions like Type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure or thyroid issues.
The Impact of Your Beliefs on Health
When we hold limiting beliefs about our health, we unknowingly restrict our own potential for improvement. The idea that “this is just how it is” or “I’m too old to change” can create a self-fulfilling prophecy. When I was diagnosed with thyroid disease, I could have easily given in to the belief that my health was beyond my control. However, instead, I chose to educate myself, experiment with nutrition, behaviour, and so much more, and to focus on healing my body from the inside out.
Now I understand that our bodies are incredibly resilient. With the right nutrition, movement, and mindset, we can significantly improve our energy levels, restore hormonal balance, and even reverse conditions like Type 2 Diabetes. It’s all about starting with the right foundation.
The Power of Connection to Your Body
For years, I ignored the subtle signals my body was sending me. I used to believe that if I just pushed through and ignored the discomfort, I could keep going. Now I know that listening to my body, tuning in to what it truly needs, is the key to long-lasting health.
This shift has made all the difference. I’ve learned that when we start paying attention to things like excess stress, low energy, hunger cues, and emotional triggers, we can identify patterns that are contributing to our health issues. That connection is a powerful tool for improvement. Whether it’s through mindfulness, sitting down to drink your tea, or simply slowing down to notice the signals, tuning into your body can lead to incredible results.
The Science Behind the Change
When I became a diabetes specialist nurse (you can read more about that here), I saw firsthand how people struggled with managing their Type 2 Diabetes. I used to believe that once diagnosed, it was a lifelong battle. Now, I know that through dietary changes, exercise, and emotional wellbeing, many individuals can significantly reduce their reliance on medication, or even reverse their diagnosis.
The science is clear. Research shows that eating a healthy diet, regular physical activity, and emotional well-being can help manage blood sugar levels, reduce inflammation, and improve overall metabolic health. It’s not about perfection but consistency, and understanding that small, positive changes can have a massive impact.
